We don’t know what to say here. We all feel pretty helpless. The people at UNICEF seem to know how to help the kids in Ukraine, Gaza & Armenia (amongst, sadly, many other countries). Donate to UNICEF by clicking through this big box here. We’ll be updating our games this year but not much else, sorry.

Melonenbowle (Melon wine punch)

No ALCOHOL Option

Melonenbowle is a refreshing German drink made with – you guessed it – melon, white wine and sparkling water. A refreshing fruity drink that’s ideal for serving in a pitcher or even the melon, this must surely count towards your 5 a day. Right? Right.

There are plenty of non alcoholic versions too!

WE MADE THIS!

There are a number of these ‘bowle’ drinks from Germany. They have a long history in German culture and are often associated with traditional celebrations and festivals.

We love the colours in this Melonenbowle!

This is a fairly traditional recipe with few ingredients, resulting in a refreshing melon wine punch. We had watermelon and honeydew melon at hand so didn’t need to add any sweetener, but make sure to taste and adapt yours depending on the melons used.

TIME: 10 mins / or freeze melon balls before serving

SUBSTITUTIONS

You can use a non-alcoholic wine in this punch. Alternatively, a tonic water with some freshly squeezed lemon juice will work well.

METHOD

1.
Use a melon baller to scoop from the melon halves. Cut up the rest of the melon and place into a sieve to let the juices run through into your pitcher. Add the melon balls to the juice.

2.
Add some ice cubes and the mint to the pitcher. Pour over the wine and sparkling water, then stir once.

(Optional: you can place the melon balls into the freezer in advance, then skip adding the ice cubes)

3.
Garnish with lemon slices!
